Welcome to the Inclusion Department at York High School!
Lead Practitioner - Mrs Stevens
The Inclusion Department at York High School is responsible for co-ordinating and delivering the school’s provision for students with special educational needs or disability (SEND). Our main aim is to ensure that all our students are provided with an education that enables them to make progress so that they achieve their best, become confident individuals and make a successful transition into adulthood.
The school’s main priority is ‘teaching first’ and we support this by providing high quality support for students’ learning and participation in the school curriculum and community. We achieve this by delivering a variety of personalised interventions and support within and outside of lessons, such as helping students to take part in class activities, adapting resources or equipment, working with students in a small group or supporting students with physical or personal care. The Inclusion Team also run a variety of popular activities at lunchtime and afterschool, such as homework clubs, games room, a football team and a gardening club. These aim to ensure that young people are able to participate fully in school life and are an important factor in raising their self-esteem. We also liaise and work closely with external agencies to ensure that our students and their families have access to specialist information, advice and support, where needed.
We are comprised of a team of caring, enthusiastic and committed staff. As well as a large team of highly trained and experienced Teaching Assistants, our team also includes Key Stage 3 and 4 Pastoral Mentors who work closely with our young people to ensure that we are meeting their needs and providing an appropriate level of support. Our expectations and aspirations for students are high and we work hard to ensure that our students gain the confidence, self-esteem and independence necessary to achieve their goals. We pride ourselves on our excellent knowledge of the students we work with and our ability to use this information to help all our students to make progress, regardless of their starting point.
