The Inclusion Department at York High School is responsible for co-ordinating and delivering the school’s provision for students with special educational needs or disability (SEND). We understand that parents and carers are the experts of their children and we strive to work in partnership with them to ensure the best success. Our main aim is to ensure that all our students are provided with an education that enables them to make progress so that they achieve their best, become confident individuals and make a successful transition into adulthood. We aim to identify and removing barriers to learning so all our students can thrive.

The school’s main priority is ‘teaching first’ and we support this by providing high quality teaching assistant support for students’ learning and participation in the school curriculum and community. We deliver a variety of personalised interventions and support within and outside of lessons. We offer a range of interventions to improve literacy, numeracy or social skills. These interventions are measured before and after and routinely lead to great progress. such as helping students to take part in class activities, adapting resources or equipment, We  liaise and work closely with external agencies to ensure that our students and their families have access to specialist information, advice and support, where needed.

Some students require a more personalised approach to learning. Inclusion 1 is a learning space which acts as the hub of the SEND department. It provides  a base for learning for students who are not in lessons for either social, emotional or learning reasons.

Our expectations and aspirations for students are high and we work hard to ensure that our students gain the confidence, self-esteem and independence necessary to achieve their goals. We pride ourselves on our excellent knowledge of the students we work with and our ability to use this information to help all our students to make progress, regardless of their starting point. We have experience of all aspects of special educational need and disability and look forward to getting to know more about your child.
