The Communications Faculty at York High School consists of English, Modern Foreign Languages and Expressive and Performing Arts. It is a faculty made up of 14 highly skilled members of staff, who offer a wide range of exciting opportunities to the young people we teach.
All pupils study English during 3 periods per week following schemes of work which are carefully written in line with National Curriculum teaching objectives at KS3, and differentiated to suit individual needs. Following the Year 9 National Curriculum Assessments pupils begin their KS4 course in preparation for their GCSE English and English Literature exams. Pupils gain a varied experience through their study of English which includes Shakespeare, modern drama texts, original writing, media and poetry. Students also develop their speaking and listening skills. All pupils sit their English GCSE in November to secure them the highest grade at the earliest opportunity.
At KS3 all pupils are also given the opportunity to learn at least one language from French, German or Spanish.
Pupils studying a language gain a valuable insight into the culture of another country and learn to communicate on topics such as holidays, food and leisure. At KS4 pupils can choose to continue a language to GCSE level, which broadens their knowledge and strengthens their command of the language in preparation for AS/A level studies.
The Communications Faculty is well resourced with up to date materials, PC's, interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, TV and DVD units and audio equipment to aid learning and enthuse learners by using a range of exciting and up to date technology.
The faculty is committed to inspiring young people to maximise their KS3 and KS4 achievement and affording them the widest range of opportunities both in the classroom and through extra curricular activities such as foreign trips to Barcelona, Holland and Tanzania, language taster sessions in partnership with York College, cinema trips and theatre trips.
