The Sport and Health Faculty is committed to promoting the long term health and well being of the young people of York High School as well as the wider community.

We motivate young people through a well developed programme of sporting activities including traditional games and athletics, health related activities, gymnastics including trampolining, dance and outdoor education activities based around climbing and orienteering. We believe the extensive programme of sporting activities on offer engages all pupils in the curriculum whatever their athletic ability.

At KS4, all pupils will have 2 hours of core PE. The programme will further develop skills from KS3 and offer pupils the opportunity to try new sports. Our programme is designed to allow full access to the facilities at Energise Sports Centre. In addition to core PE, the faculty offers qualifications in GCSE PE, BTEC First Diplomas in Sport and Dance, Short Course PE, Sports Leadership and NVQ in Activity Leadership.

In the Summer of 2009 York High School was awarded Healthy School status and we work closely with our caterers and outside agencies to educate pupils on healthy lifestyles, diet, nutrition and hydration.

From September 2010 as the only Sports College in the city we will be the lead institute for the new Specialised Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure. A broad programme of activities enabling young people to play a range of sports, leisure based activities and get involved in leadership opportunities such as the Dreams and Teams initiative that recently created the opportunity for a number of pupils to visit Tanzania. The leadership programme enables students to gain confidence and achieve nationally recognised awards whilst working alongside other younger students at York High School and with local primary schools.
