Welcome to the PE Department at York High School!
Subject Leader: Mrs Haldenby
The PE Department is committed to promoting the long term health and well-being of the young people of York High School as well as the wider community.
We motivate young people through a well-developed programme of sporting activities including traditional games and athletics, health related activities, gymnastics including trampolining, dance and outdoor education activities based around climbing and orienteering. We believe the extensive programme of sporting activities on offer engages all pupils in the curriculum whatever their athletic ability.
At KS4, all pupils will have 2 hours of core PE. The programme will further develop skills from KS3 and offer pupils the opportunity to try new sport and equip them for a healthy active lifestyle beyond York High. Our programme is designed to allow full access to the facilities at Energise Sports Centre. In addition to core PE, the faculty offers qualifications in GCSE PE.
For GCSE PE, pupils follow the OCR specification. The course is assessed through the completion of two exam papers worth 60% of the final mark and through the completion of coursework, involving assessment of performance in three practical activities worth 40%.
York High School also has Healthy School status, we work closely with our caterers and outside agencies to educate pupils on healthy lifestyles, diet, nutrition and hydration.
The leadership programme at York High School is well established and enables students to gain confidence and achieve nationally recognised awards whilst working alongside other younger students at York High School and with local primary schools.
