Students due to join York High in September enjoyed a packed programme of events earlier this month as they took part in the school’s Summer School Programme.
York High began running Summer School for students moving from primary to secondary school during the pandemic when the Government funded activities to support transition when students could not experience the typical transition visits. The programme this year built on that of the last few years.
York High School’s Deputy Headteacher, Victoria Burns said: “We recognised the tremendous positive impact that this had for students as they became more confident with the school environment and staff, as well as making many new friends before September. Last year we offered a similar experience but this year’s programme was even bigger and better!”
Students were welcomed to York High at the beginning of the week and participated in ice-breaker games, creative arts, sport and fitness and a workshop using Photoshop. The programme is closely linked to the school’s values of Resilience, Aspiration, Success and each day had a key enquiry that students explored to deepen their understanding and knowledge. Tuesday’s activities were linked to the local area with students visiting York Minster and the Castle Museum. Wednesday saw students travel to Whitby to learn about the Abbey and local fishing trade, before heading to the beach for fish and chips and football. The week was brought to a close back at school with a hands-on session where students planted seeds for their success, reflected on their highlights from the week and baked treats to serve to parents and carers at a celebration afternoon.
Victoria adds: “The children were a delight throughout the week, they engaged so well with all of the activities and demonstrated many of the qualities we encourage in our students, especially having an enquiring mind and respect for others. The programme would not have been possible without the team of people supporting it and warmest thanks are extended to the staff who delivered the sessions each day, with a special thank you to Mr Bower, Head of Religious Studies, who did an excellent job of leading the programme. We were very fortunate this year to be able to offer these experiences at no cost to parents and a huge thank you is extended to a local resident who generously funded our Summer School Programme.
“There were some tired children and very tired staff by the end of the week! The students made us smile every day and the friendships that they formed during the week will certainly help reduce the nervousness they may feel about starting their secondary school journeys.
“Thank you to the students who took part, you should be very proud of all you achieved, and thank you to parents and carers who came to support on the Friday afternoon. A special mention to our prize winners from the week: Elijah, Audrina and Leo, for showing exceptional Resilience, Aspiration and Success.”
