    Y9 Holocaust Memorial Trip 2017

On the 1st of February, the RE department organized it’s annual trip for year 9 pupils to visit the Holocaust Memorial Centre in Nottingham. We went through a museum on site, looked around the memorial garden and heard the story of a Holocaust survivor.

In the museum there was photographs of Jewish families, information of how the war started, Adolf Hitler, examples of Nazi propaganda, model layouts of the ghettos and concentration camps and memorials of people who helped families in the war.

The gardens contained plaques with messages about loved ones from the war. There was also a pile of stones which we placed more on to remember the children who died in the war.

We heard the firsthand story of Hanika Dye, a woman who was born during WW2 and was separated from her mother when she was only 10 days old. She told us the story of the struggles that she has had all of her life and told us about her family and how they protected her.

We learnt a lot of valuable lessons such as the fear Jewish people felt as they tried to survive and how much we should appreciate that we don’t live in a war struck country.

  • RSC Royal Shakespeare Company

    Published 31/01/17

York High School is one of 12 Lead Associate Schools in the country for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC.) As part of this we are privileged enough to be hosting the RSC’s First Encounters performance of The Tempest.

“On a crazy island swirling with sounds, exiled Duke Prospero uses magic to create a home within the wilderness.

As his beloved daughter Miranda falls in love with a shipwrecked stranger from their homeland, she rebels against his power. Prospero must risk forgiving those who betrayed him, or lose her forever.

Fun, fantasy and sorcery collide in this gripping story of how love and reconciliation can conquer fear and control. It is an ideal first experience of Shakespeare for anyone aged eight and above. Using Shakespeare's original language, this edited version last 90 minutes and includes a fully interactive introduction to the world of the play.”

The performance will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 8th February in our very own school hall. Tickets are just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. This is an amazing opportunity to see professional RSC actors performing one of Shakespeare’s most loved, magical and engaging plays within a community setting.

Tickets are available to reserve from the York High School finance office (01904 555501) and can be paid for on the evening of the performance. There will be a short Q and A with the actors after the performance so parents and young people can ask questions.

We hope to see you there!
