    THIS WEEK:

Today saw the final whole year group exam for Year 11.  Apologies to those with Music Technology and Graphics next week! It is always a strange day when the Year 11 leave as it can be very emotional for both staff and pupils.  The year 11 students have done 900+ days at York High School and a lot has changed during this time.  Mrs Evans came back from her operation for one last assembly to the students that she has worked so hard to support over the last 5 years.  The round of applause and the numerous gifts that she received showed how appreciative the students were for all her efforts in the last 5 years.  Year 11 students past and present will be delighted to know that I once again performed the “You are born at this wall ………..” routine.  Good luck to all of Year 11 and remember life is like throwing a ball against a wall.  You will get back what you deserve.

Elsewhere in the school on  Monday the Year 8 cricket team played against Manor.  We recorded our highest score of 35 runs. James Robinson from year 7 got the most runs for the team.   Alex Dowson and Harrison Woodall both bowled really well.

On Wednesday the year 7 girls took part in a RFU u13 girls rugby festival on Bridlington Beach. All the girls did really well considering most of the other teams were made up of majority year 8 students. Ella Irvine and Ruby Rollinson were stand out performers.

Students also took part in the Athletics Championships at York University yesterday and Mr Kenny tells me that all the students performed well, with special mentions for Kieran Goddard, winning the Shot Putt and for Harvey Precious finishing 2nd in the 1500 metres – both progress to the finals.

We are currently planning for next year and have this week taken a survey of 500+ students about their attitudes and thoughts on the school.  Many of you will have received an e mail with a link to a similar survey for parents.   Your views are vital to the school,  I want to create a partnership between Students, School and Parents that will drive improvement at YHS.

Finally, YHS once again took part in the York Pride parade celebrating the work we do in promoting a healthy and open atmosphere around challenging Homophobia. It was a fantastic day with over 50 students (past and present) joining staff for the parade, with many more students and their families enjoying the entertainment on the Knavesmire.

Have a great weekend – Come on England

    THIS WEEK:

In the middle of GCSE’s you can forget the other things that happen in school.

So first of all congratulations to us all for winning the Big Pedal regional competition.  This is awarded to the school in Yorkshire where the most students cycle to school.  Not only did we win the regional competition but we were 11th nationally.

Congratulations to all the Key Stage 3 athletes who competed in the York Schools Athletic Competition on Tuesday.  Well done to all competitors but I must give a special mention to Harvey Precious, Ollie Brook and Jade Goddard who have qualified for the finals.  14 Year 8 Girls competed which shows great commitment.

Tomorrow staff and students will be representing York High school at York Pride.  It is fabulous to see that from the days when we were the first York school to be represented at Pride now all secondary schools and some Primaries will be represented.  York High school have lead the way in tackling Homophobia.

Welcome back later on tonight/tomorrow morning to all of Year 9 who are returning from Barcelona.

    That’s all from me

    Have a great weekend

    THIS WEEK

Here we are at the end of the fifth half term and another busy week.

    Here are the highlights:

Year 10 are in Berlin with Mrs James, and a "returning for three days only" Miss Hannam!  Looking on the app that tracks their movements I think they are in Potzdamer Platz at the time of writing this update.

Well done to Year 11 for the effort that most have put into their exams this week, having a Year 11 daughter I know just how tired you will be with revision and the exams.  Keep up the hard work over the holidays.

It is always good to hear positive comments about YHS students.  14 Year 10 students visited York St Johns and we received the following comment.  “Your students were excellently behaved and engaged and interested, they really got involved and were a credit to your school.”

Looking to the future - we are seeking to improve behaviour in particular low level disruption.  I would be very interested to hear from parents/students and ex students about how big an issue low level disruption was/is for them.  Please message me your thoughts.

Year 9’s who are going to Barcelona don’t wish your half term away.

Finally have a great holiday and stay safe

    THIS WEEK:

I would like to start by saying sorry for missing last week, but it was for a good reason - I was at another school interviewing English teachers.

Recruitment has formed a massive part of our plans for next year and we have assembled a youthful and talented team for next year.  Conventional recruitment does not always get a large field in the current educational climate and we have used many interesting and new methods to get the best teachers in front of our students for next year.

Now, on to what has been happening - and what a busy couple of weeks we have had . . . . . .

Last week some of the Year 9 students visited Kingswood for a character building residential with Mrs Callan and Mr Langley
