Key Dates

  • Flu Immunisations (all year groups) – Monday 4th & Monday 11th December
  • SEND Coffee Afternoon – Thursday 7th December
  • Year 11 Parents Evening – Wednesday 20th December

Mr Hassack, Mrs Kitchen and Mr Wappat from the South Bank Trust have been in school this week.

They have commented on the high quality of lessons and the purposeful atmosphere around school.

Mr Wappat also enjoyed speaking to pupils who have worked hard to improve their attendance this term.

Year 11

After two weeks of mock exams Year 11 pupils should feel very proud of their resilience and determination.

Staff are now in the marking period and results will be ready to share with you at Parents’ Evening on 20th December.

I hope that pupils will enjoy some relaxation time this weekend.

YHS Way

Focus next week is on showing respect for everyone.

Greeting other pupils and staff politely, interacting with each other in a respectful and positive manner.

SEND Coffee Afternoon

Next Thursday is our first coffee afternoon for parents of children with SEND.

We would love to see parents for an informal opportunity to meet with the SENCo Mrs Stevens.  It’s also a great opportunity to meet other parents.

The coffee afternoon is from 1.30-3pm and you don’t need to book an appointment.

Please email Liz Thompson l.thompson@yorkhigh.southbank.academy if you are planning to attend.

Charity Fundraiser

Alex S in Y11 is taking part in a gruelling half marathon to raise money for Cancer Research.

Having recently lost her Uncle to cancer, Alex is being supported by her rugby club to help raise money and awareness and has set up a Go Fund Me page.

For more information or to pledge a donation please visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/yhvg3-cancer-reasearch

Community Cupboard

As the cold weather sinks in and energy prices remain high, Mrs Tattersfield would like to remind families that our Community Cupboard is still open for any families who need it.

The cupboard stocks essential dry and non-perishable items and is completely free to use.  All enquiries are strictly confidential.

Please contact k.tattersfield@yorkhigh.southbank.academy to arrange a collection.

Book Fair

Last week the Library hosted the Festive Book Fair, and what a week it was.

We had a great week of excited sales and fabulous book conversations, and thanks to all the purchases across the week, we have been able to add over £100 of books to the library!

Thank you!

Festive Showcase

With less than 2 weeks to go until our Festive Showcase, now is the time to be getting those tickets.

You will not want to miss this fabulous collection of songs, readings and entertainment on Thursday 14th December, 6pm – 7pm

Featuring a preview of the next school musical ‘We Will Rock You’, a fantastic sing-a-long, and of course the special ‘Staff Christmas Cracker’ – see teachers and support staff as you have never seen them before!

Tickets are just £3 each, and available via ParentPay or in school from the Finance Office.

Mrs Muress is also planning one of her famous raffles, so if you have anything you would like to donate for the raffle, these can be left at school reception, for the attention of Mrs Muress.

See you all on the 14th December!

Sporting News

Y10 Football

Monday evening saw Year 7 travel to Vale of York for their annual football tournament.

The 10 students did us very proud, drawing 2 games on the way to finishing 6th in the pouring rain!

It was great to see so many smiles and encouragement given throughout. They can all be proud of how they stuck at it and played together as a team.

Mr Ledgeway

Y11 Rugby

On Tuesday afternoon our Y11 rugby team travelled to Crawshaw Academy to play their first Yorkshire Cup game of the season.

After conceding the first try early on the boys knew it was going to be a tough game.

At half time Crawshaw were leading 24-12. Our team responded by scoring the next 3 tries courtesy of Tyler W and Jack W who scored with an acrobatic finish in the corner, which Oli H converted from the touchline!

The game ended in a 32-32 draw.

The boys played some brilliant rugby and at times looked unstoppable, with plenty of positives to take into our game next week.

A terrific performance from the boys in the first game of the tournament.

Try scorers – Tyler W (3), Jack W, Ashton S, Jake T

Man of the Match – Tyler W

Y7 Girls Football

On Tuesday evening the Y7 girls football team played against Millthorpe in their first game of the season. The girls were very nervous about their first game!

Throughout the first half the girls dominated the game keeping most of the play in the opposing half. Millthorpe managed to slip through our amazing defence to score 1 goal.

Spirits were very high going into the second half of the game and the girls were determined to score at least 1 goal. Unfortunately, it was not in our favour and Millthorpe scored an additional 2 goals, 1 of which was by a fingertip over the line.

Despite this our team came back better than ever with Freya M, Freya L and Sophie L working solidly upfront enabling Freya L to finally score!

Final score 3-1 to Millthorpe. Well done to all of the girls who played.
