Principal’s Weekly Post – Week 33

The Principal’s Weekly Post

Week 33: 6 JUNE 2025

Happy half term!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back for the final half term of the academic year. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break.

This is a really important time as we consolidate our learning, celebrate our achievements, and look ahead to the next challenges ahead of us. Let’s make these next few weeks count, working together to make this final half term a productive and positive one for everyone. We have exciting events and learning opportunities planned, and I encourage all students to continue engaging fully in their lessons and extracurricular activities.

To our incredible Year 11 students, this is it! As you embark on your final set of examinations, please know that we are all incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication, and resilience. You’ve prepared diligently for this moment, and we have every confidence in your abilities. Remember to take care of yourselves during this intense period. Get enough rest, eat well, and take short breaks when you need them. Believe in yourselves, stay focused, and show everyone what you’re capable of. We’re all rooting for your success.

Wishing you all a fantastic final push to the end of the academic year.

Warm regards

Gavin Kumar
Principal

City of York Council SEND survey for Parents and Carers

Young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in York, and their parents and carers, are being asked to share their views on the work of the city’s SEND partnership, the Education, Health and Care Teams which plan and organises SEND services.

If you have a child with special educational needs and disabilities please complete the survey to have your say and help shape future plans.

Please note: the survey closes today (Friday 6 June)

Year 10 Hospitality and Catering

What better way to spend a Wednesday morning than testing the resilience of Year 10 Hospitality and Catering pupils by making Chocolate Fondant dessert. The group is currently working on a mock NEA and one of the tasks set is to produce a dessert.

They have demonstrated a wide range of practical skills during the year whilst making a variety of products, facing and overcoming many challenges along the way.

Making this dessert is not easy – the difference between perfection and overbaked can happen within a minute or two so it takes careful planning and timing to get it right.

The Year 10 absolutely smashed it today. I couldn’t be prouder of them all. Well done!

Year 8 and 9 Student Leaders

We are currently recruiting for our Student Leadership team, from students in Years 8 and 9. The role will involve a variety of opportunities including: representing the school at Open Evening, tours and interviews for prospective staff, event organisation, and providing support to younger years on transition events.

Membership of such a group provides real benefits to students’ skill development, particularly for developing confidence and leadership skills. It also looks brilliant on CVs.

We are looking for students to express interest by the deadline of Friday 13 June, with at least one student per form (but there is no limit). We are very keen to have a wide range of students participating.

Please discuss this opportunity with your child – if you have any further questions, please contact me on v.bettney@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk.

Excellence Every Day Awards

Students were right back into earning their Excellence Every Day Award this week.

Congratulations to: Annie, Merow, Andrea, Amelia, Haryar, Jules, Verity, Alexa, Mutsa, Ryan, Jacob, Charlie and Joseph for picking up an award nomination in the first two days of this half term.

Community Cupboard

Our school is committed to helping those in need through our community cupboard, ensuring that every student and family has access to essential food/household items. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated, as they help us continue to support the local community.

If you or someone you know needs any support, please contact Aimee a.stewart@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk or Emma e.masterman@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk, or pop into main reception.

All requests will be handled with care and confidentiality.
