Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this email finds you well. As part of our ongoing commitment to upholding high standards of appearance and fostering a respectful and purposeful learning environment, I am using the Principal’s Post this week to inform you of a number of important updates to our school uniform policy for the next academic year.
All pupils are required to have a school bag/rucksack to carry their equipment, planner and PE kit. The other uniform that is required is listed as follows:
Pupils in Years 7-9
Pupils in Years 10-11
School trousers must have a front fastening clip and zip to be classified as school trousers. Leggings, jeggings, jeans and chino type trousers are not permitted.
PE Kit (compulsory for all pupils)
Jewellery
Pupils are only allowed the following items of jewellery in school:
No other items of jewellery are permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, large earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and other piercings.
Discreet Make-Up Only, this means that make-up should be subtle and natural-looking, enhancing the pupil’s appearance without being overly noticeable or distracting. No false nails or nail extensions and only clear nail varnish is permitted.
During the Summer term, Summer Uniform comes into place and we allow school shorts for both boys and girls. We have no issue with girls not wearing tights with their skirts during the summer term only so long as their skirt is knee length.
It is wonderful to see the way our students at York High School wear their uniform with such pride. Should you require any assistance with purchasing an item of our uniform please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Progress Leader so that we can offer support through our Community Cupboard.
I thank you in advance for your continued support with our uniform policy moving forward into the academic year 2025/26.
Warm regards
Gavin Kumar

Today, we had the joy of welcoming back former student, Aaliyah Hewitt, to York High School. Aaliyah attended York High between 2015 and 2020, moving on to study at York College and then York St John University. Aaliyah spoke to a range of students about her experience at school, how she learned from her mistakes, and her experiences during her BA in Counselling and Mental Health degree. She also had a tour of the school from her youngest sister, to see how the school looks five years on!
It was wonderful to see how many students engaged with hearing her experiences and how she has progressed. Aaliyah said: “I’ve enjoyed being back at school, it has been really rewarding and a chance to give back. It’s been really nostalgic and I’d definitely like to come back in the future!”
We’re looking forward to welcoming her back in the future – congratulations on your success, Aaliyah, we’re very proud!
If you are a former York High pupil and would be interested in returning to speak to students, take a look at our alumni page on the website or email Vicky Bettney on v.bettney@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk to discuss a visit.
We are delighted to have elected our two Head Pupils, and six Deputy Head Pupils, from our Year 10 cohort. They will be leading our student leadership group into next year.
They are such fantastic role models for our younger year groups, and we are so excited to see the ideas they come up with. Congratulations to Izzy and Paisley, our Head Pupils, and Thomas, Lucy, Anitah, Tillie-Mae, Emily and Kayla, our Deputy Head Pupils.
More than 25 Year 8s and 9s have also signed up to join our Student Leadership team, which again is wonderful to see. We’ll be running some training to support them in leading events, interviews, and tours of the school. They are very keen to get started on their opportunities – and even more excited about their new Student Leader badges!
The deadline for final payments is Monday 16 June at 3.00pm. Payment can be made via ParentPay or cash payments can be made in school.
Our school is committed to helping those in need through our community cupboard, ensuring that every student and family has access to essential food/household items. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated, as they help us continue to support the local community.
If you or someone you know needs any support, please contact Aimee a.stewart@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk or Emma e.masterman@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk, or pop into main reception.
All requests will be handled with care and confidentiality.
