Principal’s Weekly Post – Week 32

The Principal’s Weekly Post

Week 32: 23 MAY 2025

Happy half term!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the end of what has been a truly wonderful half term, I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements and successes of our students. It has been a period filled with hard work, dedication, and significant progress across all year groups. From outstanding academic results in assessments to brilliant performances in sports, arts, and extracurricular activities, our students have consistently demonstrated their talents and commitment. It’s been a joy to witness their growth, resilience and enthusiasm every day. Each success, big or small, contributes to the vibrant and thriving learning environment we are so proud to have here at York High School.

I would like to also extend my sincere thanks to all our staff for their tireless efforts and unwavering support of our students. Their passion and dedication are truly inspiring.

Finally, a huge thank you to you, our parents and carers, for your continued partnership and support. Your encouragement at home makes a significant difference to your child’s journey.

I wish all our students a restful and rejuvenating half term break. I hope they take this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming them back, refreshed and ready for the challenges and opportunities that the final summer half term will bring.

Warm regards

Gavin Kumar
Principal

School reopens after half-term break

Year 7 take on Dragons Den

Another Year 7 group have had an employability skills based workshop, delivered by Jess and Jack from The Place. Students were introduced to Dragon’s Den, before designing their own product to solve a problem. They had to justify their item through a pitch to the dragons.

The students were wonderful and had some incredibly innovative products. Well done!

Year 10 Form Time Enrichment

On Tuesday this week, Year 10 had their first enrichment form time, with fun activities incorporated into the school day to provide students with an opportunity for enrichment. We hope that demonstrating to students how enjoyable activities can be incorporated into a routine, around important revision and work, will support students further.

We had football, biscuit decorating, games and bingo for our first sessio.! Looking forward to the next one after half term!

Year 7 Liverpool Trip

All deposits for this trip must be paid by Tuesday 3 June, to enable us to make our first payment to providers. Once this payment has been made, the monies are non-refundable.

Year 9 Battlefields Trip

The Year 9 Battlefields trip is now full, however we are able to extend the number of spaces if required. Please contact v.bettney@yorkhigh.elt.org.uk as soon as possible if your child is interested.

Thank you to all parents and guardians who have completed the ticket request form.

The YHS Graduation Committee met this week to make some key decisions on decor, music and food choices. Through a unanimous vote in favour, students will cross the graduation stage in friendship groups.

YorkMix School’s Out Challenge 2025

YorkMix and YorkMix Radio are giving under 18s the chance to make a difference in their communities with their brand new School’s Out Challenge.

They’re giving young people the chance to prove that they can make a difference, to learn new skills and prevent school holiday boredom! It’s free to take part in thanks to sponsorship from Yorkshire Profiles.

What is the challenge?

In groups of up to six people, participants are asked to put together a project that will make a difference to your community. You can work with your friends to benefit your street, your village or area of a town, it’s your call!

The only rules are that the project you pick must benefit your community and you need to have an adult supervisor to oversee your project.

For further information, please take a look at the challenge brochure or visit the YorkMix website.

Apprenticeship vacancies

York College is currently advertising a number of apprenticeship vacancies which can be seen on the attached pdf. Each vacancy has a hyperlink to the Apprenticeship Service website, where you will find full job details and where you can submit your application or details of who to apply to.
