Message from the Head – Week 1

Week 1 – 8 September 2023

Welcome Back

Fantastic to see the students back in school.  The atmosphere around school has been brilliant this week.

One of the highlights has definitely been meeting the new Year 7 pupils and welcoming them to the school.  They have shown an excellent attitude to learning throughout the week.

All pupils have been introduced to the York High Way in assemblies; this outlines the basis for our respectful relationships and positive culture for learning.

Attendance

Attendance continues to be a big focus for us this year and Miss Burns has reminded pupils about the Every Day Counts message, as well as explaining who to talk to in school if there are any issues with attendance.  Staff are working to support pupils and celebrate their good attendance with you so you can expect a text message update from the attendance team about your child’s attendance this week along with some positive phone calls.  Thank you for such a positive start this week.

The vast majority of pupils have arrived at school on time and looked very smart in their uniforms; thank you for your support with this. They have shared stories about their summer holidays which we have enjoyed listening to.

A Great Start

Mark Hassack the CEO from SBMAT was in school this week and he was very complimentary about the calm atmosphere around school but even more importantly he talked about how polite and charming the YHS students are.  This does not happen because of the school but because of the work that you do as parents or family members.  It is typical of the way that we as staff, students and parents work together for the benefit of our students.

School Uniform

On Monday 11th September, students do not have to wear their jumpers in school but looking at the weather forecast we will be wearing jumpers on Tuesday as the weather changes, rain comes and the temperature drops.   We always allow students to remove jumpers in class if it is too warm.

School Enrichment Programme

Miss Bettney is very excited to be launching the Enrichment Programme beginning with Year 7 pupils today.  Pupils will receive a booklet filled with information about our clubs, educational trips and competitions.  Please ask your Y7 children to share it with you.

And Finally..

School Photos are next Wednesday so be prepared for extra time with the hair straighteners before school!

Enjoy the last weekend of Summer.

Rod Sims

Headteacher
