We have had a brilliant day at York High today.
The students had a brilliant assembly from Phil Martinez and ex student Cain North explaining why we were raising money for Oscars Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity.
Throughout the day we passed a rugby ball on the Tennis Courts with the grand finale in period 5 when the whole school came out onto the astro for the final events where we were joined by Ellie Hendry and Carrie Roberts from York Valkyrie.
We do not know the final totals but as a school we passed the rugby ball for 802 km and have raised £365 for Oscars.

YHS Big Bake Off for Comic Relief
When I asked staff to take part in the YHS staff bake off for Comic Relief I was pleasantly surprised by the number of keen and willing volunteers who were eager to ‘get their bake on’.
On Thursday 14 March, afterschool, complete with red noses, staff from a wide range of departments got together to bake their best sweet treats for Comic Relief.
There was plenty of competition between bakers (Mrs Turner and Mr Cadwallader with their red nose face decorated cupcakes), a few surprise bakers (Mr Drury with his amazing brownies), a few who took things very seriously (Mr Byrne with his custard cream blondies) and at least one
person who resorted to using a packet mix (you know who you are!!!).
All bakes were sold at break time on Friday and the pupils couldn’t get enough of the delicacies on offer so much so that we raised a whopping £128.35 for such a worthy cause.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who took part and all the pupils who bought one of the bakes.
A special mention also needs to go to Mrs Walker (Pastoral), the winner of this year’s trophy, whose bakes were voted the best by the pupils.

Year 7 English
Miss Taylor’s 7×2 class have made some amazing models of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for their project this half term.
- 1st places to Jay D and Emily S
- 2nd places to Hor-Kiu S and Bobby L
- 3rd places to Emma F, Eleanor M and George B.
Excellent effort from the whole class this half term, I’m so proud of 7×2!

Year 8 English
Mrs Begum’s 8×2 class have been busy making Victorian research projects this half term.
They have all done amazingly well and we had some brilliant work produced!

- Second prize goes to Henry E and Bill C.
- Third prize goes to Merleigh J, Maisie C, Sophie C and Kaiden T.
Well done 8×2 and have a lovely Easter break!
ATL Rewards Trip
Miss Burns has enjoyed inviting pupils with the highest ATL grades to a Rewards Trip to Whitby this week.
Pupils invited have taken a letter home which outlines the details of the trip to Whitby which will include: a visit to Whitby Abbey, an open-top bus tour, a fish and chips lunch and maybe an ice-cream if the weather is kind to us!
Please return the consent forms to Pupil Reception by Wednesday 10th April.
Well done to the pupils who received an invite to this trip.
As ever, competition for places was very tough, especially in Year 8 where the pupils all had an ATL of 1.07 or better, and Year 10 where six pupils had an ATL of 1.0!
Performing Arts Spotlight
Baroque concert
On Saturday 4 of our yr10 and 11 Music students attended a concert by Yorkshire Bach Choir to hear a performance of Dido and Aeneas.
They were able to see baroque instruments in action and up close.
Performing Arts Makeover
15 yr8 students took part in a full day workshop by Art Of Protest as part of the project funded by REACH.
Students learnt spray can techniques in the morning and then planned and painted 3 practice rooms in the Performing Arts corridor.
STEM learning also came to visit considering how we can implement creative learning techniques in STEM subjects.

It’s not long now until students take to the stage and perform our school musical ‘We Will Rock You’!

U13 Girl’s Football
A tough game against Tadcaster for our U13 girls football team last night. We spent most of the game in our own half but the girls kept their heads up, battled on through to the whistle and walked off the pitch with a smile on their faces. Well done girls!
U13 Girl’s Rugby
This evening we took our U13 girls Rugby team over to JoRo for the York Knights Rugby league festival. The atmosphere at the event was lovely with nothing but sporting behaviour. We won some games, lost some games and most importantly had lots of fun! Well done to all the girls for taking part.

Autism Support for Parents/CarersÂ
Support is available to parents of children with a diagnosis of autism or those waiting for an autism assessment.
The Specialist Teaching Team for Autism at City of York Council offer group sessions (online and in person), phone line support and drop-in sessions for parents. Please see the flyer for details of what’s available.

Summer Uniform
During the last two years we have seen temperatures on occasion rise to 30 plus.
During the last two years we have been asked by you if you can wear shorts instead of long trousers or skirts and tights.
As always when you speak we listen.
From May Day Bank Holiday (6th May), pupils have the option to wear tailored school shorts, such as the images below.
Pupils can wear tailored shorts but must be wearing plain black ankle/trainer socks.
The tailored school shorts must be purchased via SchoolShop.
No other type of short will be allowed.
Community News
York’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF)
Children and young people in receipt of benefits-related free school meals can receive up to eight sessions of free activities during the Easter holidays.
Each day will include: a healthy meal and a selection of activities ranging from sports, drama and creative workshops, nature activities, and much more.

North Yorkshire Police – Property Marking Event
On April 19th between 3pm-5pm, North Yorkshire Police will be holding a property marking event near the bike racks of Energise/Better Gym.
Should you wish to have your bike marked please get in touch with Reception to gain a consent form and we can arrange for your child’s property to be marked.

Parenting Workshop – A Mind of Their Own
Family Matters York are delivering a free three week parenting course which covers subjects such as:Â body confidence, self-esteem, dealing with failure and disappointment, and handling strong emotions. The workshops will be held at Acomb Methodist Church, Front Street, on Tuesday 16th, 23rd and 30th April, from 7-9pm.
