Message from the Head – Week 15

Week 15 – 21 December 2023

Key Dates

  • Staff Training Day – Monday 8th January 2024
  • All Students return to school – Tuesday 9th January 2024 ~ 8:40am

What a fantastic way to end the term!

Rewards Assemblies

The rewards assemblies were a highlight yesterday with so many students being recognised for their consistent hard work, high aspiration and fantastic attitude to learning.

Mr Walker was also delighted with the nominations for the YHS Way Embodiment Award, with a number of students being nominated more than once!

Students who had improved attendance and those on 100% were also rewarded with donuts and badges for the 100 Club.

The improvements we have seen in attendance this term are testament to the successful working relationships between students, families and school and we would like to thank parents and carers for your ongoing support to improve attendance.

We are also grateful for the high-quality support that we have had from the South Bank Trust who have helped with our attendance systems and new ideas about how we can support students and families.

Year 11 Parents’ Evening

It was great to see so many students and parents at Year 11 Parents’ Evening where mock exam results were given out.

Conversations were focused around this being the halfway point in the year for Year 11 who begin their GCSE exams next spring and how three achievable actions can make all the difference to overall grades.

We are also excited to be able to share a new revision strategy for Year 11 students starting in January and our thanks to Mr Wappat at the South Bank Trust who has helped us to plan this.

A note from Miss Burns

This is the time for students, families and staff to relax and enjoy the festive period, recharging batteries ready for the Spring Term.

Thank you to everyone for your support during this half term whilst I have been Acting Headteacher, it has been very much appreciated.

It has been wonderful to have Mr Sims back in school this week in good health and even higher spirits, planning his return in the New Year.

Enjoy the holiday and we look forward to seeing all students back on Tuesday 9th January at 8.40am.

Mr Walker

Year 8 Netball

Last week, I took 13 Year 8s across to Fulford to play their last game of the year. All the girls played amazingly well working together as a team and applying their skills.

In game 1 we began strong scoring within the first few minutes. It then became a game of ping pong with lots going on throughout the game. The girl’s held their ground and attacked with strength ending the game with a 4-2 win to YHS!

For this team it was their first fixture, so they were over the moon with a win!

Our usual netballers followed on in game 2 after a couple played out of position in game 1.

Nyla scored an amazing shot from just inside the D and Imogen even said “this isn’t going in” and went on to score. But they couldn’t have done it without the rest of the team working the ball down to them. This game was neck and neck the entire way through but with Fulford scoring in the final minute it led us to draw 5-5.

We also had assistance coach and umpire Issy Coupland showing off her fair and professional judgement throughout. Giving the girl’s solid feedback and helping to keep me sane!

Well done girls  – I unfortunately forgot team photos again!
