Welcome to the Mathematics Department at York High School!
Subject Leader: Mr Byrne
The Mathematics department consists of eight teachers and has the use of at least six classrooms. Each room has an interactive whiteboard. Teachers use a range of resources to motivate and engage pupils.
Pupils have the opportunity to engage in problem solving activities and questions within Mathematics lessons, enabling them to build up a range of strategies to solve mathematical questions. Mathematics is an important subject and teaching is intended to highlight the relevance of class work to everyday situations.
Pupils whose progress is below expectations in year 7 follow a catch up timetable with extra Mathematics tutoring each week for a period of time.
In Mathematics, pupils in year 9 start a three year programme towards their GCSE. In 2017, the first year group will be sitting the new reformed GCSE in Mathematics. This will contain more topics than before. In getting ready for this pupils in each year group now get seven hours of Mathematics over two weeks. At GCSE, we currently use the Edexcel exam board.
It is essential that all students have their own calculator which they bring to all lessons in order to become familiar with it throughout the year. This is in addition to all the usual Mathematical equipment: pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor and pair of compasses. This equipment can be purchased in school. Revision guides and exam workbooks are also available at a reduced rate.
